Purpose of Meeting
Caregiver Cafe: Communicating with Your Mentally Unstable, Defiant Child (This is a rescheduling of an event originally on December 12, 2022.
Do you sometimes feel like your child is blaming you for their illness? Does it seem like they are 2 different people? Are you fighting a lot? Then this workshop is for you!
Connect with other parents struggling with their child's aggressive behavior to learn some new skills designed to help you keep the peace at home! As caregivers, we often realize that traditional disciplinary actions and communication strategies just doesn't work with our mentally unwell children, and we have to learn new ways to communicate.
The discussion will be led by Tess Snyder, Mental Health Advocate and certified NAMI and DBSA teacher and support group leader. Tess is also the parent of an adult child with mental health challenges that began at age 6. Tess will present recent research concerning the state of our youth's mental health and discuss communication styles and techniques that are based on proven de-escalation and conflict resolution principles. Come prepared to learn and participate according to your comfort level. Couples are welcome and encouraged! This event is for caregiving adults. Frank discussion is encouraged, and be assured that your privacy will be honored. We suggest not mentioning names or personal details during discussions.
Although we are focusing on communication with mentally unstable teens and adults, any parent is welcome to join us and learn something new! There is no charge for this event, thanks to the generous support of the Lakeland Community Foundation and the Lorain County Community Foundation.
