We're so excited to invite the public to our drop-in countdown event to the 2024 Total Eclipse Kick Off Party on Saturday, April 1st from 11:00am to 1:00pm at the Avon Lake Public Library.

Avon Lake Public Library in partnership with the City of Avon Lake, is excited to begin the countdown to the 2024 total solar eclipse by holding our “Eclipse Kick Off Party” on Saturday, April 1st, 2023, from 11:00am to 1:00pm. No foolin’! This is our way to start a year-long countdown to this once-in-a-lifetime total solar eclipse event, which will be visible on Monday, April 8, 2024. The community of Avon Lake sits directly in the line of totality which means we will be in the path where moon will completely block out the sun for nearly four minutes, which is the longest duration to view this event.

As a part of our “Eclipse Kick Off Party”, from 11:00am to 1:00 pm we’ll be offering a variety of eclipse-inspired crafts for all ages (while supplies last), an opportunity to learn about how to practice safe solar viewing with telescope viewing demonstrations and opportunities to look through them with the assistance of the Black River Astronomical Society, and information available to learn more about the upcoming partial and total solar eclipses.

At 12:00pm (Noon), there will be a special presentation by Suzie Dills, Planetarium Director of the Hoover-Price Planetarium located in Canton, Ohio. Dills will be sharing maps of eclipse totality and viewing, safe eclipse viewing, timing for the April eclipse, and the science behind eclipses. Seating will be limited to 100 people for this presentation in the Waugaman Gallery.  No registration, first come, first seated.

We’ll also include information on where to purchase reputable and safe eclipse viewing glasses, viewing locations, and so much more.
